Ready to Lead: Building Confidence Across Generations

I’m grateful to the editors at FamilyBusiness.Org for publishing my new article on how leadership readiness develops across generations in enterprising families.

In conversations with founders and senior leaders, I often hear a quiet tension: a desire to prepare the next generation for greater responsibility while also protecting the principles and decisions that built the enterprise.

On the other side, rising leaders often want to contribute more, but aren’t always sure how their judgment will be received. Both generations are trying to do the right thing, and both are watching the other for signs of confidence.

Readiness tends to grow in the day-to-day work of making decisions together. When rising leaders take on responsibility that matters, and senior leaders stay close enough to see how their thinking is taking shape, trust begins to form in a steady, recognizable way. The handoff stops feeling like a single moment and starts feeling like a shared process.

The article offers language and frameworks that many families and family offices have used to make these transitions clearer and more collaborative. If your family or family office is preparing for the next stage of leadership, I hope the piece helps spark conversations that move things forward.
