Joseph Reilly’s post about Matter Family Office’s use of industrial-organizational psychology caught my attention because it connects two parts of my professional experience that are not always seen together.

I am a Member of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP). My doctoral training and professional work have included pre-employment assessment, employee selection, role fit, leadership development, and team effectiveness.

In a family office, those capabilities can help clarify what a role truly requires, evaluate candidates more systematically, and consider how someone is likely to operate in a setting where judgment, discretion, and relationships carry unusual weight.

The same background informs my current work helping families and advisory teams improve communication and decision-making around consequential issues. Selecting the right people and helping families make sound decisions may appear to be separate domains. Both require disciplined attention to people, roles, context, and decision processes.

Joe’s post also raises a broader question: How can family offices make better use of the full range of capabilities available within their professional networks? Here's the interview: Family Wealth Report - Getting into What Matters for HNW Families
