New Article: When succession feels stuck, change the choice

When succession feels stuck, the problem may be the choice the family is trying to make.

Succession is often compressed into two either/or categories: founder in charge or founder gone; successor waiting or successor fully responsible. Under that framing, uncertainty can quickly become a verdict: the founder will not let go, or the successor is not ready.

Families usually have more choices than those labels suggest. They can ask:

• What does each person actually want?

• Which responsibilities could move now?

• What still benefits from the founder’s involvement?

• Which decisions belong to management, and which belong to ownership?

• What evidence of readiness matters?

My new article for Canadian Family Offices explores how families can make progress by bringing assumptions into the open and separating questions of roles, authority, readiness, timing, ownership, and future contribution.

Thank you to Joe Chidley and Ashley Redmond for the opportunity to contribute.
